Below you will find helpful guidelines and procedures to help ensure a successful year.
Snack: Please send a small, healthy snack for your child everyday. Fruits, vegetables, and crackers are great examples as long as they need no special preparation and do not make a mess. Please do not send in items containing peanut products. Students may bring water bottles to drink at school.
Birthdays: Instead of bringing snacks, children will receive a birthday pencil, book mark, and have the opportunity to sit on a special stool for the day. They may choose to bring a sticker or pencil for each member of the class.
'Top Dog!': When it is close to your child's week, a detailed letter of how to prepare will be sent home. Sometimes the schedule changes slightly, moving more quickly or getting set back a week. You will be notified of such changes via the 'Top Dog' parent letter.
Home Folders: A home folder should come home everyday with assignments and notes. This folder is also where the word study calendar and reading log can be kept when not in use. Any communication from school to home, and home to school can be placed and accessed from the folder. Children store them near their mailboxes for the day and I encourage keeping them in backpacks when at home.
Transportation: If you plan on having alternate transportation for your child after school, Please send a note that morning so that we can notify the office and arrange for safe transportation of all our students (e-mail or handwritten).
Positive Behavior Incentive: Students may earn Lyon 'Paws' for displaying positive character traits, going above and beyond expectations, and setting an overall awesome example for others. Once 15 are earned they may be traded in to sign the Lyon Pride Book! This is a great honor and, of course, all students are capable of such an accomplishment. Weekly, we take time to personally recognize others by sharing shout-Outs. Shout-outs are specific compliments written by the teacher in the newsletter or verbally shared by peers during class meetings.
Behavior Concerns: We all have bad days. Should children need extra reminders they will be asked to move their clothespin down to yellow (reminder), orange or red (note home or time off afternoon break), which is a visual reminder to improve choices. Conversely, if a child makes excellent choices later in the day, clothespins may be moved back to green (ready to learn) or further up to blue (Lyon Leader!). If poor choices continue a child may fill out a reflection note with the teacher to be later signed at home. This is a communication tool and should not happen often. Should concerns arise at home, please feel free to contact me and we can discuss goals and strategies to help your child be successful.
Weekly Newsletter: Most reminders, dates, and topics that are covered in class will be sent home on Fridays in our class newsletter. You can expect to receive a 'Miller Magazine' weekly, except during shortened weeks. My favorite portion is the 'Shout-Out' section!
ipads: These will be stored at school; when and if they are sent home consistently, you will receive communication with intended learning and app tips. To maximize this learning tool and strengthen students' responsibility, It is suggested that chargers be stowed in a backpack pocket; this way it is available for charging at school and home.
LRC: We will be heading to the LRC weekly, as a class, to check out books and sometimes to hear a story as well. Books may be turned in ANYTIME as checkout times vary.
Thank you so much for your support. Here's to a spectacular year!
